Border Route Hiking Trail (BRT)

...scenic vistas of the border lakes...

The BRT is a rugged backpacking trail, traversing some of the most scenic areas on the BWCA.  This 75 mile point-to-point trail is within the Superior National Forest with more than half within the BWCA.   The trail connects the Kek trail with the Superior Hiking Trail.  All but the 10 miles east of the Superior trail is maintained.  Access is from the Gunflint Trail or Arrowhead Trail.

Length: 75 Miles

Entry points: 81 (west), 82 (center), 83 (east)

Maps: Fisher Maps # F12 - 13 - 14, Also see the Border Route Guidebook.

Campsites:  Few campsites exclusively for backpackers, many sites shared with canoe campers.  Anticipate making your own camp if the one you want is not available.

Water: Long stretches with no water access.  Side trips on canoe portages are often necessary.

Trip options: Seven access points along this  stretch, providing anywhere from a 7-mile day hike to a 65 mile backpacking expedition.

Features: Very scenic - high cliff overlooks, lakes, streams, waterfalls, old growth pines.

Challenges: Rugged, rocky trail; high, sometimes steep, hills; hard to follow in places; long shuttle may be required for some routes.

Additional Information:  Border Route Guidebook available from the MN Rovers (651) 257-7324
